The Freedom of Information Act 2011 gives members of the public the right to request information held by public institutions, including the Local Government Service Commission.
Your right to information
The Freedom of Information Act 2011 gives every person the right to request access to records held by public institutions in Nigeria, including the Local Government Service Commission, Jigawa State. You are not required to give a reason for your request.
How to make a request
Send your request in writing to the Commission, addressed to the desk officer for Freedom of Information. Your request should describe the information you are seeking clearly enough for us to identify it. You may submit it through the Contact page by selecting Request for information, by email, or in person at the Commission's head office. Please include a postal or email address so that we can reply.
What happens next
- The Commission will acknowledge your request.
- We will respond within seven days of receipt, as required by the Act.
- Where the request concerns a large volume of records, or records held by another institution, we will tell you and, where the Act allows, transfer or extend the time as provided for in the Act.
- If the information is refused, we will tell you which provision of the Act is relied upon.
Fees
There is no fee to make a request. Where the Act permits a charge for reproducing documents, you will be told the amount before the work is carried out.
Information that may be withheld
The Act allows certain records to be withheld — for example, where disclosure would harm national security, interfere with a criminal investigation, or reveal personal information about a third party without their consent. Where only part of a record is exempt, the remainder will be released.
If you are not satisfied
If the Commission refuses your request, you may ask for an internal review, and you may also apply to the Federal High Court for a review of the decision, as provided by the Act.
Further information
The Commission publishes gazettes, circulars and reports in the Resource Centre, which may already contain the information you need.
